Belarus will not be able to escape responsibility for the war in Ukraine – PACE
Parliamentary Assembly of the Council Europe has decided to establish a special tribunal for the crime of the Russian terrorist state and Belarus, EP reports.
The PACE resolution on the legal and human rights components of the Russian aggression against Ukraine has become the main document on Ukraine, which was adopted at the current session of the Assembly. It pays considerable attention to the creation of a new international legal mechanism for punishing the crime of aggression.
“There is no other international criminal tribunal competent to prosecute and punish the crime of aggression committed against Ukraine”, — explains his call to PACE.
The Assembly also paid special attention to the fact that representatives of the leadership of Russia and Belarus, who are mentioned in the document on the same level, should be responsible for the crime of aggression.
“Russian and Belarusian political and military leaders who planned, prepared, initiated or carried out these actions, and who had the ability to control or direct the political or military actions of the state, must be identified and held accountable. Without their decision to unleash this aggressive war against Ukraine, the atrocities arising from this war would not have happened, », — emphasizes the document. PACE, however, notes the need to investigate also war crimes, crimes against humanity and allegations of genocide, which fall under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.
During this session, PACE called several times for the creation of a special tribunal, and also emphasized that the Council of Europe should play a key role in this process.
