36 years later, the illustrious Tim Burton returns behind the camera to bring to Beetlejuice its sequel: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Released in theaters on Wednesday, September 11, the film this time sees the young actress Jenna Ortega, star of the Netflix series Wednesday, play the leading roles, alongside big names such as Michael Keaton (who already played for Tim Burton in Batman in 1989 and then Batman Returns)in 1992), and Winona Ryder, back for the occasion. In the nearly forty years that separate the two works, the two stars have changed a lot, as has the rest of the cast.
Michael Keaton/Beetlejuice
Michael Keaton is a regular at the Burton house. Before playing Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman and Batman Returns, the American actor played the “bio-exorcist” in the film released in 1988, a role that definitively launched his career. This was followed by a collaboration with Tarantino in Jackie Brown and then with Soderbergh in Out of Sight, in which he played the character of Ray Nicolette. Pixar called on him to lend his voice to two of their characters: the car Chick Hicks in Cars(2006) and the Ken toy in Toy Story 3 (2010). After appearing in the 2014 remake of the 1987 film Robocop, he returned to the spotlight the same year with Alejandro González Iñárritu's multi-award-winning Birdman. In 2017, he took on the role of the antagonist Vulture in the blockbuster film Spider-Man: Homecoming.In 2019, he reunited with Tim Burton in the film Dumbo, almost thirty years after their last collaboration. He is therefore very recently on the bill in Beetlejuice Beetljuice, in the role he played more than thirty years ago.
Alec Baldwin/Adam Mailtland
Alec Baldwin also got his first role with Beetlejuice . He then starred in a whole series of action films such as: The Hunt for Red October (1990), Pearl Harbor (2001), The Departed (2006), It's Up to You (2009), Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015), and Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018). But it is for this case of involuntary murder that he is making headlines again in 2021. On the set of the western Rust, he accidentally kills cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The accident is linked to the use of a firearm from the film, a weapon that was supposed to be loaded with blanks. He is eventually released and no charges are filed. At this stage, the accident theory is favored.
Geena Davis/Barbara Maitland
Beyond her role as Barbara Maitland inBeetljuice, Geena Davis bursts onto the screen in Thelma and Louise, a film in which she was nominated for best actress. But the American actress will never manage to return to the top, due to the two commercial failures that are Pirate Island and Goodbye Ever After, five years after Ridley Scott's film.
Winona Ryder/Lydia Deetz
Along with Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder is the only actress who is back in Beetlejuice 2. She reprises her role as teenager Lydia Deetz, still tormented by the memory of Beetlejuice. Between the 36 years that separate the two films, Winona Ryder played for Tim Burton in Edward Scissorhands in 1990, and in Alien, Resurrection (1997). She is now known for her role as Joyce Byers, Will's mother in the series Stranger Things, which she has played since the first season released in 2016.
Jeffrey Jones/Charles Deetz
In addition to his role as the snobbish father Charles Deetz, Jeffrey Jones is also known for playing Emperor Joseph II in Milo“ Forman's Amadeus in 1984. He signs two more roles for Tim Burton: Criswell in Ed Wood and Reverend Steenwick in Sleepy Hollow: The Legend of the Headless Horseman (Sleepy Hollow). The rest of his career was much less brilliant. He was convicted of assault on a minor in a case dating back to 2003, after which he was listed as a pedophile until September 2009. Having failed to appear at the hearing to update his status, he was arrested and sentenced in June 2010. This event and the resulting scandal put an end to his acting career.
Catherine O'Hara/Delia Deetz
Some will have recognized Catherine O'Hara in the diptych Home Alone! and Home Alone! by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter 1 & 2). In fact, she plays Kevin McCalister's mother. She then turned to dubbing and lent her voice to rather well-known films such as The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Chicken Little (2005), Brother Bear 2 (2006), Frankenweenie (2012) and more recentlyThe Addams Family (2019).
Glenn Shadix/Otho (died in 2010)
Glenn Shadix's career came to an abrupt end in 1993 when he died following a fall at home, which left him with a head injury in 2010. Aside from his role as the set designer Otho, he has never played major roles.
Sylvia Sidney/Juno (died in 1993)
Born on August 8, 1910 in the Bronx, Sylvia Sidney is already very old when she plays Juno (78 years old). We owe her a great career in silent cinema in the 30s. She died eleven years after Beetlejuice.
