Beauty all around: polar explorers showed an incredible sunset near "Vernadsky"

Ukrainian polar explorers from the Antarctic research station “Akademik Vernadskyi” often share beautiful photos of nature. This time they captured an incredible sunset around Galindez Island.

A photo of this rare sight was published by the National Antarctic Science Center on Facebook.

On one side, the sky was a rich orange-blue color with a purple layer at a certain moment, and on the other – a delicate pink-lilac, according to polar explorers.

It is rare to see such beauty, because most of the time in this area the sun is hidden behind clouds. But yesterday it just happened to be a clear day, so in the evening the sky became multi-colored, – noted the National Center of National Academy of Sciences.

According to them, such colors are formed due to the low position of the sun. Then the light has to travel a longer way to the surface than when the sun is high above the horizon, and therefore the colors scatter differently.

And the color of the sky depends on the filling of the air with different particles and even the underlying surface: snow , ice or water, from which the rays are also reflected, the scientists explain.

Currently in Antarctica autumn and daylight gradually shortens. On March 30, it lasted 11 hours and 11 minutes in the “Vernadsky” district. The shortest days here will be in the Antarctic winter. In particular, this year, from June 19 to 22, the sun will rise over “Vernadsky” for only 3 hours and 24 minutes.
