Austrian developers presented the universal BlackBird drone with innovative capabilities

Austrian technology company CycloTech announced preparations for tests of a new demonstration device with vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) BlackBird. Its key feature is the use of the innovative CycloRotor propulsion system, informs Interesting Engineering.

CycloRotor, according to the developers, — a unique development capable of creating traction in any direction at 360 degrees. This allows the BlackBird to perform vertical take-offs, precision landings, hovering and even braking in the air, ensuring high maneuverability and flight stability.

The device will have six CycloRotor engines, which guarantees its reliability even if one fails. BlackBird will be compact: 4.9 m long, 2.3 m wide and 2 m high, with a maximum take-off weight of 340 kg. Expected speed — up to 120 km/h.

Developers see the potential of BlackBird both for personal use in cities and for complex rescue operations thanks to the possibility of precise hovering and landing.

The start of flight tests is planned for 2025. This comes amid growing competition from other eVTOL market players such as Volocopter, Airbus and Joby Aviation.

Innovative system CycloRotor propulsion and BlackBird's compact size can provide it with advantages over existing counterparts, especially in the field of urban mobility and rescue operations. The first tests will demonstrate the real capabilities of this promising eVTOL device.
