(Melbourne) Winner of 23 major tournaments, Serena Williams prevailed 6-3, 6-0 over Serbian Nina Stojanovic in the second round of the Australian Open on Wednesday.
An hour and 10 minutes were enough for the American, who got the four breaks in the game. Stojanovic is 99e in the world.
Williams has been the grand champion seven times in Melbourne, most recently in 2017.
Favorite Novak Djokovic is also on the day’s program. His rival, the American Frances Tiafoe, 64e, has never beaten a top 5 player.
Seventh-seeded Aryna Sabalenka beat Russian Daria Kasatkina 7-6 (5), 6-3. The Belarusian won five breakages and seven aces.
American Ann Li defeated Alizé Cornet 6-2, 7-6 (6). The Frenchwoman only obtained seven winning shots, against 32 for her rival.
Last week Li reached the final at the Grampians Trophy. The ultimate match didn’t take place due to a scheduling conflict, though.
