In the first round, US Open will meet old acquaintances – Steve Johnson and John Isner. How will this American derby end? – read our forecast.
At one time Johnson was considered one of the finest American tennis players. In the world ranking, he even took 21st place. But the death of his father unsettled Steve. He never managed to recover from the blow and after that he started to play much worse. Recently, it has been increasingly appearing on various challengers, and in the world ranking it has dropped to 63rd line.
Steve played his last match before US Open in qualifying for Cincinnati. The Spaniard Martinez Portero fell to his rivals. Unfortunately, Johnson was unable to cope with Pedro and lost to him in all respects 3-6, 7-6, 2-6.
Recently, Isner regularly goes through several rounds at the US Open. For example, in 2019, he beat the Spaniard Garcia-Lopez and the German Struff here. Only Marina Cilic managed to stop him. Two years ago, John played here in the quarterfinals, and in 2017 he again went to the 1/16 finals.
At the Masters in New York, Isner performed quite well. In the first two matches, he beat Hubert Gurkacz (7-5, 6-4) and John Millman (4-6, 7-6, 7-6). In the third round, John had to play against Tsitsipas. He could not cope with the Greek tennis player 6-7, 6-7.
In face-to-face meetings, the score is 5-4 in favor of Johnson.
Isner hasn’t beaten Johnson since 2015.
In 4 of the last 6 face-to-face meetings, tennis players have played the maximum number of sets.
Both players have a strong serve in their arsenal. They build the game around this component. In the last four fights, they have played five tie-breaks among themselves. Most likely, in this meeting, we are again waiting for a lot of these “tennis lotteries”. Well, since since 2015 Johnson regularly wins at least a set from Isner, we doubt that this fight will be an exception.
Our forecast – total over 3.5 sets for 1.53 odds in bookmaker 1xBet
