Iran has seen a sharp increase in executions in the past month, according to rights groups. A report by the Human Rights Watch News Agency (HRANA) on Friday said at least 133 people were executed in the month of Aban (October 23 – November 21), including at least one person in public. During the same period, 24 new death sentences were handed down, and seven previously handed down death sentences were confirmed by the courts, Voice of America reports.
HRANA notes that executions in Iran are often carried out without due process, raising serious questions about the fairness of trials. Among those executed are several political prisoners and participants in the 2022 Iran protests, heightening concerns that capital punishment is being used as a tool to suppress political dissent.

In early October, HRANA reported that at least 811 people were executed in the country between October 2023 and September 2024. Iran has not seen such a high figure for almost a decade. Of those, 23 were women.
Iran carried out 75% of all death executions worldwide in 2023, human rights activists said.
Iran's human rights record has attracted international attention. This week, the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning Iran for its widespread use of the death penalty, especially against minors and those convicted on the basis of forced confessions. The resolution notes the lack of fair trials and due process in many cases.
The resolution was adopted by 77 votes in favor, 28 against and 66 abstentions. Among those voting against the resolution were Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, China, Cuba and the DPRK.
