At least 12 people stripped of Russian citizenship for failure to appear at military registration and enlistment office

At least 12 naturalized Russians were stripped of their acquired citizenship for failing to register for military service and for failing to appear at the military registration and enlistment office, the publication “Important Stories” reports. After being stripped of their citizenship, they were ordered to leave the country, “Radio Liberty” reports.

This summer, the State Duma adopted a bill from the United Russia party, which provides for the deprivation of acquired citizenship for failure to register for military service. According to the law, new citizens are required to register within two weeks of receiving their passport.

According to the head of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, after the adoption of this law, 10,000 new Russian citizens went to war in Ukraine. Also, as Bastrykin stated, 30,000 migrants who evaded military service were identified during raids.

As Vazhie Istorii writes, after the law was passed, courts deprived nine people from Khabarovsk Krai, Chelyabinsk, and Moscow of their citizenship for failing to register for military service. Also, resuscitation doctor Mirzomuhammad Karimov from Krasnoyarsk was deprived of citizenship for evading military service, although he received citizenship back in 2018.

Vazhanyi Istorii notes that cases of deprivation of Russian citizenship were noted before the law was passed. For example, in December 2023, a court in Chelyabinsk deprived two citizens of their passports for violating the obligation to comply with Russian laws, given when receiving citizenship.

According to the law adopted in October 2023, acquired citizenship can also be revoked based on a sentence in cases of so-called discrediting or fakes about the Russian army, sabotage, desertion, calls for anti-Russian sanctions, espionage, treason, violations of the law on “foreign agents” and participation in undesirable organizations. Citizenship can be revoked for banditry, violation of sexual inviolability, counterfeiting securities, organizing a criminal community and other crimes.

After the terrorist attack in Crocus City Hall, which, according to investigators, was carried out by citizens of Tajikistan, xenophobic sentiments towards migrants in Russia have worsened. In different regions of the country, law enforcement officers began to conduct raids on their places of residence and work. In some cases, migrants were registered with the military registration and enlistment office. At the same time, nationalists began raiding, during which they demanded that migrants be fired or that girls be forced to take off their headscarves.
