Astronomers discover the twinkling shadow of a supermassive black hole

A group of scientists from the Max Planck Institute analyzed astronomical observations of the supermassive black hole M87 *. This structure changes its shadow, while flickering is observed at times.

Black holes represent areas of curvature of space-time. The gravitational attraction of these structures blocks the possibility of leaving it for particles moving at the speed of light, including the quanta of light themselves. The limiting boundary of this area is called the event horizon. The team of scientists managed to see the vibrations of the bright shadow of the named object. Observations were carried out over it for eight years, and experts confirmed the stability of the diameter of the shadow of the structure under study and saw changes in the brightness of the glow. The work of astronomers describes the results of the analysis of observations carried out from 2009 to 2013. The scientists also took into account the analysis of data associated with evaluating scintillation measurements between 2009 and 2017.

Astronomers concluded that the observations are consistent with general relativity. The diameter of the shadow of the object M87 * remained constant over the entire specified period of research, which explains the nature of this black hole.
