Asterix and Obelix, a worldwide success since their birth

It was on October 29, 1959 that readers discovered for the first time the famous Gaul named Asterix accompanied by his sidekick Obelix in the first issue of the French newspaper Pilote. The two characters were the product of the imagination of the scriptwriter René Goscinny and the cartoonist Albert Uderzo. After the death of the scriptwriter, Uderzo will continue the comic strip series alone before handing over to a new duo in 2013, namely Jean-Yves Ferri for the scripts and Didier Conrad for the drawings.

The beginnings of the Gauls from Armorica, who still fight against the Roman invader with the help of a magic potion prepared by the druid Panoramix, are rather timid. And for good reason: the first comic book album entitled Asterix the Gaulwill only be printed in 10,000 copies in France and among our Belgian friends in 1961. But very quickly, the comic strip by Goscinny and Uderzo will gain popularity as the albums are released. For the album Asterix and the Normans, the ninth volume of the collection published in 1966, a million copies are sold. Today, the success is total because it is estimated that around 400 million Asterix albums have been sold worldwide.

We learned on October 7 that Asterix, Obelix, their dog Idefix and a Roman soldier will enter the Parisian museum that exhibits wax statues. The statues of the Gauls were sculpted by Stéphane Barret and the K-Sculpture company. This project was carried out with the museum's creative workshops.
