Apple Will Start Blocking Refurbished iPhones: Reasons and How to Avoid Trouble

Starting this fall with iOS 18, Apple will block iPhones, if it detects parts from another device, which can lead to problems for users who recently carried out repairs. The innovation is aimed at increasing safety and fighting the use of stolen parts for repairs.

This is written in 9ТО5Мас. This innovation will be available first < b>only for iPhone 15.

When trying to use details from another iPhone, the system will automatically request the Apple ID from the donor iPhone, if it is missing or incorrect, it will block the device. This solution aims to reduce the risks associated with using stolen or unauthorized components. Apple says the new component calibration process aims to:

  • < b>ensuring privacy and security: blocking parts from stolen devices helps reduce risks related to the security of user data;
  • extending the life of devices: original Apple parts , which are calibrated on devices, provide the same functionality and safety as new parts;
  • reduced environmental impact: using used parts helps reduce the amount of electronic waste.

In order to ensure the safety and correct operation of refurbished parts, Apple is expanding its repair program by allowing the use of  used components that have been properly tested and calibrated. Namely:

  • use of biometric sensors: Apple is also integrating the ability to reuse biometric sensors such as Face ID and Touch ID, which will be calibrated on new devices;
  • parts and service history: the innovation involves expanding the parts history and maintenance, which will allow users to see whether a part is new or used.

Experts warn that the implementation of the new feature could lead to wide-scale iPhone crashes, especially for those users who have recently repaired or replaced components. Therefore, if a person recently sent their device for repair, it may be worth waiting to install the iOS 18 update, to avoid possible problems.

Apple is actively expanding the number of service centers that have access to original spare parts and tools, and already counts more than 10,000 independent service providers and authorized service centers. This makes it possible to increase the availability of repairs and ensure quality service for users.
