Apple may revive microLED technology in new smart glasses

The next-generation Apple Watch Ultra was extensively tested with microLED, but the company stopped the work because the high cost of the display prevented it from going ahead with the commercial launch. Although this event can be written down as one of many failures for Apple when it comes to introducing the latest technology, the Cupertino firm is rumored to not have thrown in the towel when it comes to microLEDs as it prepares for future smart glasses. The rumor also mentions an estimated year when mass production is said to begin, so let's discuss those details.

What else is known

The rumor does not specify whether Apple's smart glasses will launch mass production in 2026 or microLED panels, but it is mentioned that the company's high-end smartwatch will have this panel.

Apple's smart glasses development challenges have probably been exhausting, but the company will reportedly release its AR glasses sometime in 2027 . Unfortunately, numerous obstacles can arise at any time that prevent progress. According to Jukanlosreve, Apple plans to use microLED technology for this wearable device, with mass production expected in 2026.

However, the author of the information did not specify whether the smart glasses or displays will go into mass production in the aforementioned year, but hopefully we will get some confirmation in the next post on X. Even if Apple somehow managed to overcome the expensive process of mass production of microLED panels, AR glasses – this is a completely new ball game. First, this device must be extremely light, meaning it must be a few grams heavier than traditional reading glasses.

Second, the chipset powering this wearable technology must deliver performance of iPhone, consuming 10 percent of energy, which is currently impossible to achieve. The rumor also mentions that there are plans to include microLEDs in the upcoming Apple Watch Ultra model, with a targeted launch in 2026. Yukanlosrev didn't say where he got the information about the California giant's plans, but it seems overly ambitious.

Then again, Apple is one of those multibillion-dollar organizations that aim for the sky, and sometimes that approach makes for great products. , while in other cases the company is forced to abandon development. The status of the smart glasses and the Apple Watch Ultra is yet to be announced, so we'll be waiting for future updates.
