Apple launches new iPads and a new version of the Apple Watch

In a non-face-to-face event, like the rest of those held this year, the company has renewed many products but not the new iPhone

Let's go over the list: a new iPad Air with a revamped design, more like the iPad Pro; new, more powerful versions of basic iPads; a new version of the Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Series 6 , with the ability to measure oxygen saturation in blood; and a new low-priced smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series SE that is similar in performance to the Series 4 model but for only 299 euros.

Missing? It's September, the month that Apple tends to unveil its new iPhones but there hasn't been a trace of them at this special event, held remotely like other Apple events this year. The reason does not surprise anyone at this point. The pandemic has altered the company's launch schedule, delaying its flagship product.

Now it is expected to introduce the new phones in October. But that is not to say that this event was not important and some of the new devices are crucial for an Apple increasingly dependent on services and focused on health.

Apple Watch Series 6

The most important, without a doubt, is the new generation of the company's smart watch, the Apple Watch Series 6. As the previous model will come in two case sizes, 42 and 44 mm, you can have the screen always on and will have a version. compatible with LTE telephone networks.

Apple has included, however, new abilities in its device. This will be the company's first watch to feature a blood oxygen level sensor. Within 15 seconds it is able to detect oxygen saturation in the bloodstream.

Apple is going to participate in three new studies together with universities and research centers to use the measurements obtained by these sensors in treatments against asthma, heart conditions or Covid-19.

The new watch can also be paired with the iPhone of a family member for those households where not all members (such as children) have an iPhone.

The Apple Watch Series 6 will also be available in new colors, including a red from the Product RED family. Its processor is 20% more powerful than that of the Series 5 and its screen between two and three times brighter and is better read outdoors in bright sunlight. The new watch will start selling this week for 429 euros for the base model.

Apple Watch SE

In previous years, Apple has kept previous editions of the Apple Watch as a lower-priced entry device. On this occasion, it will launch a new model specially dedicated to competing with simpler and cheaper activity wristbands.

The Apple Watch SE will have features quite similar to those of a Watch Series 4 from two years ago for 299 euros, but it will include some sensors from the 6 series, such as the altimeter. The company will also keep the current Apple Watch Series 3 for sale at a price of 219 euros.

Apple Fitness +

The commitment to health and physical well-being is also growing this year with Fitness +, a new service of guided gymnastics and yoga classes with courses recorded every week and synchronized with the Apple Watch. The classes can be viewed on the iPad, iPhone or AppleTV and are accompanied by personalized music.

The service will be limited to only a few countries (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United States) during launch and will arrive at the end of the year. The price will be $ 10 a month or $ 80 a year and the courses can be used by the whole family.

With so many services already active, it was only a matter of time before Apple began offering bundles. Starting this year you will have Apple One, which will combine iCloud, Apple Music, Apple TV + and Apple Arcade (plus Apple News + and Apple Fitness + in the countries where they are available) for a single monthly payment.

8th generation iPad

The second focus of the presentation was the iPad, Apple's popular tablet. The eighth generation of the device will update the processor to the A12 model to offer 50% faster speed than the current model. The design remains, and so does the keyboard and Apple Pencil support.

Apple also boasted during the event that its entry-level iPad is now twice as fast as the best-selling Windows computer, and three times faster than the best-selling Android tablet. The iPad will begin to be sold this week at a price of 379 euros for the model with 32 GB of memory.

iPad Air

The new iPad Air is undoubtedly a tablet that breaks the mold. The delay of the iPhone has made it the device of choice to introduce the company's new generation of A14 Bionic processors , the first 5nm processors.

Compared to the previous version of iPad Air, it will represent a considerable leap in graphics and computing power, and for the first time, the iPad Air will have several artificial intelligence tools built into the chip.

The tablet will have a design similar to that of the iPad Pro, but without FaceID biometric authentication. Instead, Apple has integrated a fingerprint reader into the power button. The tablet will use USB-C instead of a lightning port and will be compatible with the trackpad keyboard released for the 11-inch iPad Pro (uses the same screen).

The new iPad Air will be available from next month with a price that starts at 649 euros for the basic model with 64 GB of memory.

Apple has also used the event to announce that it will launch the new versions of its iOS, tvOS and watchOS operating systems.
