Apple has’a a patent for a passive stylus that does not need to be charged, although it works almost as well as requiring charging. It's all about special technologies invented by the company's engineers.
As stated in the patent application, microscopic reflectors will be located at the tip of the stylus. Light sources and photodetectors built into the screen can receive the light reflected by the stylus, and a special controller will calculate the position, tilt and force of pressing. The illustrations show examples of the stylus being used with various Apple gadgets, including a smartphone, tablet, touchscreen laptop and smartwatch. Most likely, the stylus will be incompatible with already released devices, since the screen should have additional sensors.
