Apple to release 5x camera for iPhone 16 Pro

Apple's upcoming iPhone 16 Pro will get the periscopic camera with tetraprism and 5x optical zoom that debuted last year on&nbsp ;iPhone 15 Pro Max,DigiTimes reports. Taiwanese lens manufacturers Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) are believed to be the main suppliers of the tetraprism camera components for the iPhone 16 Pro. Sources close to the supply chain indicated that Largan and GSEO are currently ramping up production in preparation for the release of the iPhone 16 line.

Largan, which supplied the periscope lenses for the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max, will again provide a significant part of the orders. Largan Chairman Adam Lin recently noted that peak sales in the optical components sector are expected from September to November, in line with the expected release period of the "iPhone 16 Pro" models.

GSEO, a new supply chain entrant, is reported to of this component, is undergoing quality control with promising results. According to DigiTimes, the GSEO periscopic lenses are currently undergoing testing and production is expected to begin in mid-July if they pass the necessary tests.

The tetraprism periscopic lens presented at ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max, offers up to 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom – a significant improvement over previous models, which were limited to a maximum of 3x optical zoom. In addition to improving optical zoom with the telephoto camera, the periscope lens is expected to improve overall image stabilization and low-light performance.
