Apple Intelligence will take up 4 GB of memory on your iPhone

As October approaches, Apple is preparing for the big launch of Apple Intelligence. We already know that it needs a whopping 8GB of RAM to run, but now it's revealed that it also needs some storage space.

According to the support document, “Implementing Apple Intelligence on iPhone” , any iPhone with Apple Intelligence on iOS 18.1 or later will require 4GB of memory dedicated to this feature. This effectively drops the starting storage from 128GB to 124GB on the iPhone 16, 16 Plus and 16 Pro, and from 256GB to 252GB on the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

A note on the page indicates that “Memory requirements for Apple Intelligence models on the device will increase as features expand.” This likely means undisclosed features coming to iOS 19 and later, but it could mean that iOS 18 features coming next year, including the next generation of Siri, may require more memory.

It is not clear why the 4GB of space is required or why a similar document for the iPad does not include such a requirement. Macs are also not mentioned, other than requiring an M1 processor or later.

Apple Intelligence will be rolling out gradually starting with iOS 18.1 next month. The first wave of features will include writing tools, including text and notification summaries, a “more capable and conversational Siri” and improved search in Photos. This will be followed by imaging features including Genmoji and Image Playground, as well as context-aware Siri and ChatGPT integration.
