Through a citizen petition released last weekend, various social groups from Puerto Montt, located just over 1,000 kilometers south of the capital Santiago, reached the City Hall to sign an application demanding that the late dictator Augusto Pinochet, who ruled the country between 1973 and 1989 under the dictatorial regime, revoke the title of “Illustrious Son”.

This was reported by the local media Diario de Puerto Montt, after talking with the leader of the Association of Former Political Prisoners Salvador Allende, Irma Alvarado. In turn, among the entities in the Los Lagos region that participated in this petition were the Association of Politically Exonerated and the Egaña Corporation.

In this way, the councilor of Puerto Montt , Evelyn Chavez, announced that during the month of March a vote will be taken to revoke the mention of the former Chilean dictator (who died in December 2006), out of respect for the victims of the civic-military dictatorship. “We will no longer have councils until March, and without a doubt, we will begin to put pressure on the mayor to put on a table the revocation of the title of Illustrious Son of Pinochet and vote on it in the Municipal Council,” he declared.

< p class="paragraph">“This is not just a lack of respect for Puerto Montt but for all the victims of the dictatorship in the country, their families, friends and colleagues. I wonder how it is that 50 years after the coup, we have to continue repealing tributes to Augusto Pinochet; Of how many more communes is this character an illustrious son? That is why the municipalities must review every file they have so that we know what recognitions have been delivered”, added the councilor.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Puerto Montt, Gervoy ParedesHe maintained that although he was not aware of the situation until the councilor sent him the request, he also confirmed that the issue should be resolved in March. “I have in my hands the newspaper clipping of the time, the way it was done. I think it is unpresentable, whatever the dictatorship, in this case, many people were subjected to blood and fire,” said the community chief of the mentioned city.

It should be remembered that, in this case, Augusto Pinochet obtained the title of ''Illustrious Son'' of the commune of Puerto Montt to promote his leadership in the government junta of the time. The decree in question was signed on March 1, 1974 by the mayor of Puerto Montt in those years, Raúl Brahm Yuraszeck, who formalized the appointment of the former dictator.

In the years of the Chilean dictatorship, there were many communes in the country that gave the title of ''illustrious son'' to Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, but in recent times there have been several that have revoked this appointment, as It is Santiago, Valdivia, Castro, Punta Arenas among other communes.
