Unexpected find: forgotten works of Salvador Dali were found in a London garage

A forgotten collection of lithographs was found in a London garage, which includes 10 works by the Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí. The entire collection could fetch up to £5,000.

The lithographs, created and signed by the surrealist, have lain in a garage in Berkeley Square, Mayfair, for 50 years. This is reported by The Telegraph.

It turned out that these works were bought in the 1970s for about 500 pounds, later the lithographs were lost in the clutter of the garage. The collection also includes five lithographs by the French artist Theo Tobias. All the works have been put up for auction and can sell for up to £5,000.

The garage owner invited Chris Kirkham, antiques expert and deputy director of auction house Hansons Richmond, to value the works before the move. He called the find “an amazing discovery.”

I was invited to appraise some antiques for a client. During the visit, the seller took me to the garage, and this treasure trove of surrealist lithographs appeared… They had been hidden and forgotten for about 50 years. It was quite surreal. “You never know what you're going to find during a regular home visit,” Kirkham said.

Salvador Dali is a Spanish surrealist artist known for his technical skill, precise drawing and vivid imagery. Then he first studied painting in Madrid, where he became interested in impressionism, cubism and avant-garde trends. In the late 1920s, he became close to Surrealism and joined the Surrealist group in 1929, soon becoming one of its leading exponents.

His most famous work, The Persistence of Memory, was created in 1931. Dali also worked in sculpture, graphic art, fashion, animation and photography, while exhibiting an eccentric public behavior that often overshadowed his artistic achievements.
