This Sunday, Americans celebrate Father's Day. This holiday is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June.

On this day, American families honor their fathers. Gifts are given to them and dinners are held in their honor.

According to History.com, Father's Day was first observed on July 5, 1908, when a West Virginia church held a service in memory of the 362 men who died in December, as a result of explosions at the mines of the Fairmont Coal Company in Monong. However, it was a one-time event, not an annual event.

According to History, Sonora Smart Dodd, who lived in Spokane, Washington, first attempted to make this an annual event. She had five siblings; father, early widowed, raised six children.

Dodd's initiative was successful, and in 1910 Washington celebrated Father's Day for the first time on a statewide scale.

Gradually, this custom spread throughout the country .

According to some reports, Americans spend over a billion dollars each year on Father's Day gifts.
