American developers will create the world's first hypersonic missile interceptor

The US Missile Defense Agency has chosen Northrop Grumman to develop the first hypersonic missile interceptor within the Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) program. Northrop's project beat out a rival from Raytheon after initial prototype development by both companies from 2022. The project is expected to reach initial operational capabilities by the end of 2029, informs Military.

GPI is a joint program between the US and Japan, which is aimed at the development of a long-range hypersonic missile interceptor. In the future, the program will provide regional missile defense for both countries.

The interceptor will be integrated into the  system « Aegis» and will be used on ships of the "Arleigh Burke" and Typhon mobile missile systems. The missile will have a two-stage design for better maneuverability and the use of a hit-to-kill kinetic strike.
