American developers have created a cheap drone for the Armed Forces that does not require GPS navigation

A group of young American developers created a new drone for the Armed Forces, which does not depend on GPS, in just 24 hours. This invention has already interested the US Special Operations Forces. The project was launched at a hackathon in San Francisco, where a team of three people, including 24-year-old Ian Lafferty, worked without sleep to find a solution for drones that didn't require GPS navigation that could be silenced.

The cost of this drone — less than $500, and the main feature — using images from cameras for orientation.Using Google's map database and simple machine learning, the drone analyzes the terrain and determines its location without satellite signals. Thanks to data compression, maps of territories with an area of ​​more than 10,000 square kilometers can be downloaded onto a 256 GB SD card.

Developers have communicated many times with representatives of the Ukrainian military, Laffy said. They developed a system taking into account that the real situation does not always correspond to the static picture.«I keep in mind that things are constantly blowing up. Houses simply disappear. If you are looking for a house and there isn what are you going to do?», — said Luffy.

The team is already working with  by the US Army to test the new technology in real-world conditions. Developers are now working on improving the system for different altitudes and flight speeds, which, according to Lafferty, is easy to solve. This invention has also attracted interest representatives of the Ukrainian military, because in the conditions of Russian aggression, such drones can have a significant advantage on the battlefield, where the use of GPS is often impossible due to jamming of signals.
