Republican Joe Lombardo, a career police officer and Las Vegas sheriff who was endorsed by the former President Donald Trump, was elected governor of Nevada after three days of voting.

Lombardo defeated Steve Sisolak, regaining the state governor for Republicans and turning Sisolak into a one-term Democrat in the midst of two decades of Republicans.

“It looks like we'll be within a percentage point or so of winning,” Sisolak said in a statement in the one who conceded defeat to Lombardo shortly after the results of the vote were reported in Clark County. “That's why I've contacted the sheriff to wish him success.”

“Serving you as Governor for the last four years has been the honor of my life. Thanks to everyone who believed in us and gave their all. It is important that we come together now to continue moving the state forward,” said the until now governor of Nevada.

Vote counting in Nevada took several days, in part due to a provision in the law passed by the state legislaturein 2020 that requires counties to accept ballots postmarked on Election Day if they arrive up to four days later.

Lombardo sometimes distanced himself from Trump during the campaign, and never offered any endorsement of unsubstantiated claims that the 2020 presidential election was marred by fraud. Lombardo said during his only campaign debate with Sisolak that any irregularity was not enough to change the result of the election.

The count of the votes in the state of Nevada has lasted late into the night on Friday, adding up to almost72 hours since the polling stations closed on Tuesday.

This delay in knowing the results is due to the fact that the elections in the state of Nevada — one of the three states where it is not yet known who will win the Senate race– very close, plus recently switched to a new vote-by-mail system which has delayed counting even further.

All the same up to this point , in these mid-term elections the Republican Party had not been able to wrest any governorship from the Democrats. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party has been able to take over the governorships of Massachusetts and Maryland, which were previously in Republican hands.
