After “dry January” the “Veganuary”, when will there be “Sexanuary” or “Newsanuary” to make it even more stupid?

Going a month without eating any animal-based foods: that's the challenge of “Veganuary”, a initiative from the United Kingdom that is trying to make a place for itself in France.

In total, 220 young plant-based food companies, restaurants and giants of French mass distribution are taking part in a campaign that brought together barely 30 companies when it began four years ago.

This mobilization echoes “Dry January”, the month without alcohol, and is led in France by the animal protection association L214 which has largely contributed to alerting the general public to the living conditions of battery animals. But the association now wants to “take plant-based food out of a niche segment” and raise awareness among the general public, explains Alexandra Coché, head of the Veganuary campaign.

In English, the word “vegan” is often used in reference to a so-called “vegan” diet, which excludes foods of animal origin such as meat, fish, dairy products, eggs and honey.

Veganism, in the French sense of the term, goes beyond food.

“It's a way of life that involves moving away from the exploitation of non-human animals. In terms of clothing, for example, we don't wear leather or wool. And then also in terms of practices, we're going to question horse riding, zoos, and even question pets,” explains Lucie Wiart, a researcher at Neoma Business School.

But it's on the plate that the organizers of Veganuary have put the most emphasis, since “95% of animals exploited are exploited in the context of meat consumption,” argues Alexandra Coché of L214 to AFP. “The other causes are important too, but the most direct impact comes from not eating animals.”
Phew! Insects are animals, despite what Gates, Schwab and other lunatics who also want to see us stop eating meat.

A small lobby that starts well

For “Veganuary”, French companies specializing in plant-based alternatives to meat, such as La Vie, are mobilizing their resources to target as many consumers as possible while ensuring orders are surging.

“In England, it's a very significant event that is widely relayed and followed. We double our sales in January. In France, we feel that it's taking off. We're forecasting +30% to +40% in turnover compared to a normal month,” notes its co-founder and CEO, Nicolas Schweitzer.

In addition to increasing production capacity to keep up with demand, La Vie has financed a major communications campaign to support the spotlight on Veganuary.

A necessity in particular to overcome consumers' reluctance to take the plunge veganism.

What obstacles are we talking about? “There are countless,” observes Karine Vernette, editorial manager of the French vegetarian association.

“Apart from health and nutrition issues, there are many difficulties related to the financial accessibility of alternatives and the practical knowledge that one must acquire to cook vegetarian food in a satisfying and healthy way,” she explains.

To get around this obstacle, Accro, another young French plant-based company, has a plan: it plans to publish daily until January 31, on its social networks, recipes and tips to help consumers “keep up to the challenge until the end,” says Louise Ribereau, its strategy and marketing director. “We often have the image of plant-based food as something 'boring', but in reality it is something simple and above all delicious.”

When will the mandatory “Sexanuary” be introduced, to lower the birth rate even further, there are too many of us according to the small world of Davos followers.

Or the “Caranuary” To please Anne, the bather at the City Hall. After the car-free roads, the parking meters for millionaires, a little month without a car would certainly not displease her…

Finally the ideal of the ideal, a “Newsanuary” a month without information, or social networks for the poor people… to pass the laws, and all the 49.3 of the world without anyone suspecting, increase taxes, lower the speed on the roads and motorways, increase the ring road to 20 km/hour, and force the euthanasia of the elderly over 67, except for the policies, there would be almost none left!
