After a long break construction resumes on world's tallest skyscraper

Construction on the kilometer-long Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia, which will be the world's tallest when completed, has resumed nearly seven years after work was halted by a kingdom-wide anti-corruption sweep.

The developer consortium behind the project, Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), has announced that the tower is scheduled to be completed in 2028.

The 1,000-meter-tall skyscraper is about a third complete. Work ground to a halt in 2017 when several key figures, including the heads of the main contractor and the conglomerate that co-financed the project, were arrested on corruption charges.

After the arrests, work continued, although it halted again in early 2018 . Disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has also delayed plans to reopen.

The skyscraper overlooking the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia's commercial capital Jeddah is expected to contain office, retail and residential space.

Initial plans, first revealed in 2011, included a hotel, a shopping center and the world's highest observation deck. The plans also include 59 different elevators, which the company called “one of the most advanced elevator systems in the world”.
