The US Department of Labor announced on Monday that Google had agreed to pay $ 3.8 million over allegations of discrimination against women and Asians.
Most of this money will be used to compensate 2,565 women employed by Google in engineering positions, as well as nearly 3,000 people, female applicants or applicants of Asian origin, who were not selected for such positions. , said the Labor Department.
Google said the discrimination was detected during a routine internal analysis and the company agreed to pay the amount to correct the situation, while denying that it had broken the law.
“We believe that everyone should be paid for the work they do, not who they are, and we are investing heavily to ensure that our hiring and compensation processes are fair and not distorted,” said a spokesperson for Google interviewed by AFP.
The spokesperson added that Google annually analyzes its salary data for anomalies and that the company is happy to resolve the problems of alleged discrimination.
According to the Labor Department, an assessment uncovered wage disparities at Google centers in Silicon Valley and in Washington state in the northwestern United States.
“Wage discrimination remains a systemic problem,” the office of Jenny Yang, a specialist in the Department of Labor, said in a statement.
This department also found “differences in the rate of hiring” for computer engineer positions that were unfavorable to female applicants and to Asian applicants.
As part of the settlement it accepted, Google will review its rules, procedures and practices regarding hiring and compensation, the Labor Department said.
The problems raised at Google are part of a context of denouncing a sexist culture in the technology industries of Silicon Valley, dominated by men.
