At least three people have been killed and two others wounded at the University of Virginia by shots from an individual > that he has been identified as a campus student and has not been captured.
The shooting was around 10:30 pm on Sunday, and “resulted in three deaths; two additional victims were injured and are receiving medical attention”, President Jim Ryan said in a letter to the university community posted on social media.
“This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia,” Ryan wrote. “This is a traumatic incident for everyone in our community and we have canceled school for today (Monday)”
The event occurred on the main campus of the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, some 200 kilometers southwest of Washington, local media said.
The prime suspect, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr.
The university's emergency management issued an alert Monday night notifying the campus community of an “active assailant's firearm.” The message warned students to shelter in place following a report of gunfire on Culbreth Road on campus.
In addition, it was decided to completely close the campus, as reported by the University of Virginia Police department on its Twitter account.
The UVA Police Department published an online notice that said that multiple law enforcement agencies, including the state police, were searching for a suspect they considered “armed and dangerous.”
It is believed that the suspect, identified by the police as Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., is armed and dangerous and may be driving a vehicle, according to the media.

The suspect was last seen wearing a burgundy jacket/sweatshirt, blue jeans and red shoes. Police said he may be driving a black SUV with a Virginia license plate TWX3580.
Authorities said Monday that multiple police departments are actively searching for Jones, including with the help of a Virginia State Police helicopter.
Jones is listed on the university's athletics website as a 2018 football player, although his freshman year on the team he did not participate in no party.
It is unknown if the alleged perpetrator of the shots is still a student at the university and the reasons that led to this event.
