A ship was detained in Germany on suspicion of circumventing sanctions against the Russian Federation

A cargo ship sailing from Russia and made an unscheduled stop in the East German port of Rostock, is under investigation for transporting cargo, possibly – in violation of the imposed sanctions, German authorities said on Wednesday, April 3.

The Atlantic Navigator II, operated by the Canadian company CSAL and sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, was detained by German customs. On board the ship are 251 containers of birch timber, which is subject to EU sanctions against Russia, the Rostock prosecutor's office said.

"The captain of the cargo ship is being investigated on suspicion of violating the Foreign Trade Act and payments"– a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office told Reuters.

This week, the newspaper Ostsee Zeitung reported that the ship bound for the United States also carried enriched uranium, which is not subject to EU and US sanctions. Port authorities and customs authorities refused to confirm this.

The ship has been in Rostock since March 4, after leaving the port of St. Petersburg on February 7, according to LSEG.

According According to Rostock authorities, the ship was forced to make an unscheduled stop due to damage to the propeller.
