A serious test awaits solar and wind stations: an expert explained the reason

Renewable energy sources are gaining popularity in the world. However, due to the development of new technologies, “green” energy may face serious tests.

Renewable sources take into account all the needs of the population, but are not yet adapted to the development of artificial intelligence. This is reported by 24 Channel with reference to an article by the co-founder of the analytical company Pexapark, Luca Pedretti, for the Recharge portal.

Renewable energy and AI

Luca Pedretti notes that modern data centers require 24-hour uninterrupted power supply. The typical load schedule of these facilities shows a relatively constant base load with peaks due to cooling needs, which often combine well with solar generation.

However, in this case, data centers cannot rely on renewable energy, because solar and wind farms depend on the weather. And the volumes of energy consumption are constantly growing. According to forecasts of the International Energy Agency, the global demand for electricity from AI, data processing centers and cryptocurrencies will grow from 460 terawatt hours in 2022 to 800 terawatt hours in 2026, i.e. by 75%.

Sustaining this pace will be a major challenge for renewables that could be a test commitment of technological giants to the preservation of “green” data processing centers,
– says Pedreti.

The expert believes that large companies will return to using gas, and companies such as Amazon and Microsoft are already turning to nuclear power, locating data centers next to large nuclear power plants.

Therefore, Pedreti emphasizes that now the renewable energy market must find sources of uninterrupted energy in order to withstand new trends.
