A repaired iPhone smartphone can turn into a “brick” from Monday: what happened

Apple will launch the Activation Lock function, which locks the iPhone if it is in stolen second-hand parts were used for repairs.

It will work together with the release of iOS 18, informs UAINFO.org with reference to a message portal 9to5Mac.

According to the company, in order to remove the lock, you will need to enter the password from the Apple ID of the owner of the stolen phone. These changes apply to batteries, camera modules and displays. In this way, Apple intends to put an end to the market of stolen iPhones.

200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000

Taking into account the fact that such spare parts are usually installed without the knowledge of the customer, and the service itself is often not aware of where the parts came from, experts recommend not updating to iOS 18 if your phone was in unofficial service. Otherwise, there is a risk that the iPhone will turn into a “brick”.

According to the source, the blocking of spare parts from stolen iPhones will only work with phones that have been updated to iOS 18. As a reminder, this version of the OS is supported by iPhone XR/XS and newer ones At the same time, as 9to5Mac notes, this innovation does not apply to the iPad.

The release of iOS 18 is scheduled for September 16. It is called one of the most extensive software updates for the iPhone in recent years, which will add extensive customization options, as on Android, as well as support for Apple Intelligence neural network chips for the iPhone 15 Pro and above, but already by the end of 2024.
