Tencent developers have unveiled the GFP-GAN artificial intelligence (AI) system, which has the ability to restore old damaged photos, as well as increase their resolution, according Engadget.

It is known that AI in a few seconds “finishes” missing details while maintaining image quality. The developer pointed out that usually old photos are restored with the help of AI models that look for differences between artificially generated and real images. This often leads to low-quality results.

The new approach is to use Nvidia's existing pre-trained StyleGAN-2 model, which “conducted” a model of developers in several stages of the process of creating an image. This technique allows you to save the “personality” of a person in the photo, as it focuses on facial objects such as the eyes and mouth.

Tencent noted that while the AI does not work perfectly, there may still be inaccuracies in the restored image, however, the work done already looks promising.
