In the Portuguese city of Porto, a power plant will be created that will generate energy from sea waves. Its capacity will be 1 MW, reports Interesting Engineering.
In addition, a museum and an educational center are planned there.
The project of the first wave energy station in Portugal was presented by the Israeli company Eco Wave Power. They have been studying the issue of using energy thanks to sea waves for more than 10 years.
How a power plant from sea waves will work
The system will use special floating vehicles that will be attached to the infrastructure in the coastal zone. < /p>
According to the developers, the rise of waves will activate hydraulic pistons that will move water to the ground accumulator. This liquid will be released to power an electrical generator that produces electricity.
The system is designed so that in difficult conditions they can lift it and avoid damage. In addition, it greatly simplifies the maintenance and installation of such systems.
The main goal of the company Eco Wave Power — the fight against climate change, in particular, the conversion of waves in the sea or ocean into electricity.
Are there similar wave power plants in the world
For the first time, the company installed a similar installation in 2016 in Gibraltar. The system worked for six years and was sent to Los Angeles for demonstration.
In 2023, such a station was connected to the port of Jaffa in Israel.
In addition, Eco Wave Power concluded an agreement with Turkey to build a wave power plant with a capacity of 77 MW.
In Portugal, talks about the project have been ongoing since 2020, but the company received a construction permit only in 2024.
Construction in Portugal is expected to begin in the next few years. Their future plans are to increase the capacity to 20 MW.
