The NGO defending human rights Cadal will maintain this Thursday a virtual meeting that will bring together specialists in the field. The conference “Freedom of association in Latin America and the Caribbean” will begin at 3:00 p.m. local time in Argentina.

The event arose, in a certain sense, as a response to the Celac Summit -Community of Latin American and Caribbean States- to be held on January 24 in Buenos Aires and will bring together, among others, regional leaders noted for their political practices and management in their countries.

At the summit, attendees will address the claims of entities such as Cadal and the Argentine Forum for Democracy in the Region (FADER), who constantly denounce the little respect for human rights and ask for the release of political prisoners in Cuba as well as in Venezuela and Nicaragua.

So far, the recently elected < b>Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Despite the political crisis that the country has undergone in recent days, the president maintains a friendly personal relationship with Argentine President Alberto Fernández , for which he already ratified his attendance next week.

Meanwhile, Nicolás Maduro is the name that began to resonate in the last hours as a possible assistant. Although the dictator has not yet made explicit mention of his presence or absence, according to the news agency EFE, Maduro had celebrated Lula's return to Celac and had assured that this meeting in Buenos Aires Aires “is going to be a good opportunity for the voice of our peoples to be heard”.

However, the region's third dictator, Daniel Ortega -de Nicaragua-, will not travel to the South American country.

Along with him, other important figures have rejected the invitation to the summit of Celac, which has exposed internal short circuits and has generated diplomatic tension.

It is about Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President of Mexico, and Guillermo Lasso, from Ecuador.

With the former, there is some tension with Argentina since no consensus was reached on thecandidate in Latin America to occupy the management of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The chancellor will be representing the country.

Meanwhile, relations with Ecuador were affected after the request for political asylum in Argentina for former Correa minister, María de los Ángeles Duarte Pesantes, who was sentenced to 8 years in prison for corruption. That is why Guillermo Lasso justified his absence for “agenda reasons” and, in his place, will be replaced by his foreign minister, Juan Carlos Holguín.

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte will not travel to Argentina either, while he is experiencing a strong political crisis in his country, shortly after taking office after the failed coup d'état by Pedro Castillo. Boluarte arranged, in the same way, that the foreign minister be the one to participate in the summit.
