A garden named Earth: first solo exhibition by visual artist Clara Lacasse – the express

CULTURE. The Galerie d’art Desjardins (GAD) announces its reopening by presenting the exhibition A garden called Earth starting Wednesday February 10.

The result of a year of collaboration with the Biodôme de Montréal, this very first solo by the emerging artist Clara Lacasse presents her latest photographic project, which reveals the recent transition of this living museum and opens the way to reflections on our relation to the environment. By creating a dialogue between archive images of the institution’s genesis and photographs captured during its renovation, Clara Lacasse highlights a pivotal moment in the history of the Biodôme and of our society.

Through her documentation of the upside-down and unusual scenographies of the site, the artist invites us to rethink our relationship with nature by revealing the issues underlying its conservation in a context of ecological collapse. The selection presented in the gallery opens the way for a very special reflection, as evidenced by the intentions of the artist who motivated this first exhibition.

“I want to challenge, seduce, move and disturb at the same time, in the light of the changes that are irreparably transforming our world. My images testify to the strangeness of wandering in a “nature” under construction which, once empty of animal species and workers, becomes inhabited by a silence imbued with a very particular kind of sacredness mixed with anguish “, she says.

Her work appeared all the more relevant, expresses Maude Hénaire on the choice to present this project by Clara Lacasse, that it is in line with a series of artists who place museology at the heart of their research. By authorizing the artist to stay in the site which bears witness to his recent introspection, the Biodôme de Montréal opens, not without audacity and humility, its door to a nuanced transhistoric reflection. Poetic and political at the same time, the exhibition reveals the societal values that give shape to the memory of this garden maintained under the glass arch – an image that we will have to update again and again, then which poses the central question of our relationship of benevolence towards the living.

With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in photography from Concordia University, Clara Lacasse focuses her research on the construction of narratives linked to History, nature and science, as well as to the imagination. collective. Its projects are often the fruit of collaborations with scientific, medical, legal or cultural institutions: they bear witness to the complex dialogue between science and culture by questioning their own truths. In the past, she has worked with the Redpath museum, the Montreal morgue, the Montreal Police Service museum and the ArcelorMittal mining company, in addition to having completed a residency in Fermont as part of of the programming of the artist-run center PANACHE current art.
