In Sicily, due to the activity of the Etna volcano, a red level of danger for aviation was declared. There is now a thick column of smoke and ash, so the operation of the Catania airport is suspended. This is reported by ANSA.
As noted, on the evening of August 13, the volcano suddenly began spewing red-hot lava. Since strong explosive activity is recorded in the region, experts do not undertake to predict when the eruption may end.
According to volcanologists, the eruption began in the southeastern crater of Etna. At the same time, activity increased rapidly. Local residents saw with their own eyes a flow of lava that rushed down the slope from one of the craters.
Because of this, flights on August 14 were canceled, but passengers who planned to depart gathered near the terminal. It is also unknown when the airport will resume operations. According to the latest data, the airport will still be closed until the evening.
BAGNET notes that Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe, as well as one of the most active in the world.
