Fire at Tata plant in India halts iPhone production

Early Saturday morning, a fire broke out at Tata Electronics' major iPhone assembly plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, bringing production to a complete halt. Fortunately, the incident is reported to have resulted in no casualties or injuries.

A representative of Tata Electronics Private Limited confirmed the incident, saying: «An unfortunate incident occurred at our plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu fire»«Our plant emergency protocols have ensured the safety of all our employees», – he added.

However, the fire caused significant damage to the production facilities. ETTimes reports that the fire halted production at the plant and sent workers home for the day. The report added that firefighters had confirmed that a building had collapsed on the site of the plant.

A source familiar with the plant's operations told Reuters that the affected building produced certain iPhone components. However, it remains unclear whether a nearby building, where smartphone production is due to begin by the end of the year, was affected.

Judging by the reaction of officials, it will probably take time to stabilize the situation. «At the moment, we are not we can go inside, since the path is destroyed», – Jay Saravanan, the district's senior industrial safety official, told Reuters.  «It will take one day for everything to cool down».

The full impact of the disaster is still unknown. Tata Electronics would not comment on any potential delays, but it is likely that the plants will take time and considerable effort to return to operating at their original capacity.
