A man from Calgary was arrested Thursday in Winnipeg on human trafficking charges. The victim, released by the police, is an 18-year-old Quebecer.

On March 21, Winnipeg police responded to a short-term vacation rental home on Hargrave Street [in the capital's downtown Manitoban] after receiving information from the Sûreté du Québec that a woman could be the victim of human trafficking, indicates a press release from Winnipeg police released Tuesday.

Around 5:40 p.m., officers found an 18-year-old woman and a 24-year-old suspect in an apartment. The man was arrested without incident, police said.

According to the press release, the suspect met the victim in a Montreal bar at the beginning of the in January and manipulated her into believing they were having a romantic relationship.

Investigators later learned that the man had transported the victim through four towns in Ontario, heading west, until arriving in Winnipeg.

The victim could not leave his hotel room or [where he was staying] at either location because the suspect had his personal ID and cell phone. On several occasions, the suspect physically assaulted the victim to prevent him from leaving, adds the police of the Manitoba capital.

Investigators have determined that the suspect hired the victim to work for him as an escort selling sexual services and created and posted messages on social media to attract clients. He then collected the sums of money earned through sexual services.

Nevertheless, on March 21, the victim managed to contact a person in Quebec who alerted the local police. The Sûreté du Québec then joined Winnipeg police, leading to the arrest of the 24-year-old Calgarian – who remains in custody – and the rescue of the 18-year-old victim.

The latter was able to return to Quebec to her family.
