The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) strongly condemns violence against journalists covering protests in Georgia.
This is stated in the EBU statement.
«The European Broadcasting Union strongly condemns violence and physical attacks against journalists covering demonstrations in Georgia. Dozens of journalists and media workers were physically attacked by riot police during the protests, including Davit Bedjanishvili, an employee of the Georgian Public Broadcaster, who was injured during a protest in Tbilisi, the EBU said.
The organization also expressed concern about the attempted violent entry of demonstrators into the public broadcaster's office this weekend.
“Any acts of violence or intimidation against members of the press are completely unacceptable. “Press freedom is a cornerstone of any democratic society,” the EBU said.
The European Broadcasting Union called on all parties to uphold this fundamental right and to allow journalists to work freely and safely in Georgia.
