The girl walked around the five-room apartment and expressed her delight.
She admitted to her fiancé that he had met her housing expectations. However, when he pointed to the door of one of the rooms, informing them about his mother living there, Martyna's face darkened.
She stated that at the age of 40 she couldn't live with her mother-in-law after getting married. She began to convince Paweł that the apartment would be too cramped for them with their mother.
-It's cramped in five rooms? – Paweł was surprised.
-Don't forget that I already have two sons – said Martyna – and I'm expecting a third.
-I remember, honey – said Paweł – I remember very well. – Look. One room is for Patryk, and the other for Piotrek. You and I are in one room, and mom is in the other. And there is one more room left.
-Why don't you buy your mother a separate apartment? – asked Martyna.
-I'm afraid my mother won't agree – said Paweł, reminding his beloved that it was his mother's apartment.
-Okay – she said – I'll talk to your mother myself. I'm sure I'll manage to convince her.
The whole time they were talking, Aniela stood in the doorway of her room, listening. Martyna knocked on the door. Aniela quickly ran away from the door, sat down in an armchair and covered herself with a blanket. Martyna entered the room without waiting for an invitation.
She announced that since she had become her son's wife, he had already registered her in the apartment, and that her sons would soon move in as well. Aniela thought of her as the most impertinent person in the world, but she listened. She stated that since they wanted her to move somewhere else, they should buy her a cottage in the country. Martyna immediately found a property and gave Aniela the keys and the deed.
When the bride's sons arrived at the apartment, each of them tried to enter their rooms, but the doors were locked. Martyna chose her mother-in-law's room, who was already waiting with her things for transport. The daughter-in-law asked why the rooms were locked, and what she heard floored her.
-When we bought the apartment, we divided it into two parts. My share is larger. According to the documents, I have three rooms, and Paul has two. I cleared the apartment of my presence, as I promised. What else do you want from me?
-But that's not fair – said Maryna.
-Go to your husband with that. But remember, my son promised me he would never get rid of me from here. If your husband promised you something different, I wish you good luck – Aniela replied, looking meaningfully at Paweł. – You can always visit me in the summer at my summerhouse, but not this year, because I have to do some insulation and other renovations.
Martyna realized that she had failed. Seeing how her son treated his mother, she could expect the same as a wife.
