It is known how much the funeral allowance will increase. When will the benefit increase?

Funeral allowance will go up. We know when that will happen

As the “Goniec” portal reminds us, there has long been a demand to increase the amount of the funeral allowance, which has remained unchanged since 2011. The benefit is currently paid at PLN 4,000. The plans for the increase are quite ambitious. The representative of the Ministry of Labor, Family and Social Policy said how much the funeral allowance will increase and when it will increase.

Increase in the funeral allowance. The amount has been announced

Work on increasing the funeral allowance has been ongoing since spring 2024. The allowance has been paid since 2011 at an unchanged amount of PLN 4,000. These funds have long been insufficient to cover the costs associated with a burial. Hence the emerging demands to increase its amount.

Originally, the allowance was not only to be increased, but also to be indexed annually by the inflation rate. In the latest version, it was decided to abandon this method of indexation, changing it to discretionary verification.

Marzena Okła-Drewnowicz from the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy indicated in an interview that according to the currently processed bill, the funeral allowance will increase from PLN 4,000 to PLN 7,000. zł.

When will the higher funeral allowance be paid?

Asked about when the higher amount of the funeral allowance will come into effect, Okła-Drewnowicz said that “we are talking about January 2026”. The representative of the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy indicated that the increase is not the only form of support provided for in the draft bill.

“In addition to the fact that we proposed increasing the funeral allowance to PLN 7,000, we also gave an additional provision to municipalities so that they could grant a special allowance for “above-standard” costs incurred with a funeral, e.g. related to bringing the body back,” informed Marzena Okła-Drewnowicz, quoted by the “Goniec” portal.
