Spain plans to legalize hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants

Spain's new immigration rules will allow around 300,000 illegal migrants a year to be legalized over the next three years as the country seeks to expand its workforce.

Migration Minister Elma Saiz said this, Reuters reported, adding that Spain had drawn up a plan to legalize around 300,000 illegal immigrants a year. It is part of a government initiative to tackle the problem of the large number of people living in the country without proper documentation.

“Spain must choose between an open, prosperous country and a closed, poor one, and we have chosen the former,” Sais said.

She said the country needs between 250,000 and 300,000 foreign workers a year “to maintain (its) welfare state.”

The move is part of a wider reform of Spain's immigration policy, which will also include measures to improve the skills of migrants and ensure their access to social services.
