Starting in 2025, Japanese troops will regularly deploy to conduct joint exercises with US rotational forces in northern Australia. This will be the last step of the three countries to strengthen security ties in the face of growing strategic competition with China.

At the same time, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed confidence that the US will provide the capabilities provided for in the AUKUS agreement, under which Australia will acquire US nuclear submarines and develop a new class of nuclear submarines jointly with the US and the UK.
