Latvia will receive funds from the EU for the purchase of armored personnel carriers and IRIS-T

The European Commission has approved the co-financing of two projects to strengthen Latvia's defense capabilities, which involve the purchase of Patria armored personnel carriers and the IRIS-T air defense system.

As reported by Delfi, “European Truth” writes, this was announced by the Ministry of Defense of Latvia.

One of the projects involves the purchase of Finnish Patria 6×6 armored personnel carriers for Latvia, the second – of the German medium-range air defense system IRIS-T, which passed the first combat tests in the Russian-Ukrainian war and showed high efficiency.

60 million euros are allocated for each of the projects.

“Decisions The European Commission is particularly positive for Latvia, because among the five supported projects, five are ours. Both infantry mobility and air defense are vital capabilities to protect Latvian citizens in the event of a potential attack. said Minister of Defense Andris Spruds.

The co-financing will come thanks to the European defense procurement program EDIRPA. Funds totaling EUR 300 million were distributed among five projects submitted by member countries.

Latvia signed a framework agreement on the purchase of Finnish Patria 6×6 in 2021 as part of the intergovernmental cooperation program with the participation of Finland, Sweden and Germany. – in total about 200 new cars. Production of this equipment according to the “full cycle” also takes place in Latvia.

In addition to Latvia, Estonia, Bulgaria, Germany, Austria and Slovenia will also purchase the German IRIS-T. The total amount of the Latvian order – 600 million euros.
