American developers presented an innovative air defense system that shoots down hypersonic missiles

Northrop Company Grumman has received significant funding to accelerate work on the Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) project, which is being developed by the US-Japan partnership to combat hypersonic missiles. The total budget of the project increased by $540.9 million — to $ 832.8 million, which will allow it to be extended until 2029.

GPI is designed to intercept missiles in their «glide phase» — one of the most difficult points for traditional anti-missile defense systems due to the high speed and maneuverability of the targets. The weapon integrates with the American Aegis system and can be deployed on US naval ships, which will significantly increase the defense capabilities of the fleet.

In the competition for the contract for the development of the GPI system, Northrop Grumman beat such well-known corporations as Lockheed Martin and RTX. Through this project, which also includes innovative digital design methods, Northrop Grumman hopes to optimize time and resources, and also significantly develop defense capabilities to counter hypersonic threats.
