Burning Starlink satellite flies over several US states, media reports

Starlink burning satellite flew over several states of the USA, - mass media

In the southeastern states of the USA, thousands of people witnessed a spectacular celestial phenomenon. An object appeared in the sky, which, disintegrating, formed a bright trail of fire.

This is reported by Space.com.

Eyewitnesses assumed that it was a meteorite or even a UFO , but experts say that it was a Starlink satellite of the SpaceX company.

According to astronomer Jonathan McDowell from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, the burned object was the Starlink 4682 satellite, launched back in 2022. He flew over several states — Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma, and later disintegrated in the sky over Texas.

Environmentalists and astronomers are concerned about the possible impact of the frequent burning of such satellites on the atmosphere. They indicate that when the satellites disintegrate, they release aluminum compounds that can damage the Earth's ozone layer and change the heat balance of the atmosphere.

Southampton University Associate Professor Minkwan Kim warns: if the situation is not controlled, the global impact will be felt in the next decade. .
