Trump Names Candidates to Head ICE and US Ambassador to UN

Trump names nominees to lead ICE and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations

President-elect Donald Trump has announced key new figures in his future administration. He intends to appoint former acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Tom Homan as a border “czar,” giving him broad powers to deport illegal immigrants. He also intends to nominate New York Representative Elise Stefanik to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, the Associated Press reports.

"I am pleased to announce that former ICE Director and strong supporter of border enforcement Tom Homan will join the Trump Administration to oversee our Nation's border," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Homan is expected to play a key role in implementing Trump's promise to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. His responsibilities will include overseeing the southern and northern borders, ensuring “maritime and aviation security,” and overseeing the deportation of illegal immigrants to their countries of origin, Trump said. The role does not require Senate confirmation.

In an interview with Fox News, Homan assured that ICE operations would be “targeted” and would be conducted in a “humane manner” by the agency's officers.

“When we do this work, we will know who we are looking for. We will likely know where they are, and it will be done in a humane manner,” he said.

The Associated Press recalled that Homan hinted at his role earlier this year at the National Conservative Conference.

“Trump will be back in January,” he said. – I will follow him and carry out the largest deportation operation our country has ever seen,”.

In addition, in a statement to the New York Post, Trump announced his intention to nominate Elise Stefanik for the post of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. He described her as “an incredibly strong, tough, and smart fighter for America First.”

Stefanik, who leads the House Republican Caucus, confirmed that she had accepted Trump's nomination, saying she was “truly honored.”

”I told President Trump that I accept his nomination and look forward to having the support of my colleagues in the United States Senate,” she told the New York Post.
