>> PEN announced the longlist
PEN Ukraine announced the longlists of nominees for this year's Yuriy Shevelyov Award. The longlist included 9 books.
The list was published by the press service of the organization on Friday, November 8.
On October 15, the Ukrainian PEN completed accepting applications for the literary prize named after Yuriy Shevelyov for the best Ukrainian book of essays in 2024. After analyzing the submitted applications for compliance with the technical and genre criteria of the award, the members of the chapter announced a long list of nominees.
9 editions were nominated for the award:
- Stanislav Aseev , “Melchior's Elephant or the Man Who Thought”;
- Maxim Bespalov, “In Search of Eve”;
- Yulia Buyskikh, “West of the Bug”;
- Oleksandr Zinchenko, “How Ukrainians destroyed the empire of evil”;
- Myroslav Layuk, “Bakhmut”;
- Yuriy Makarov, “Really! A book of personal discoveries”;
- Vasyl Makhno, “Chickens Don't Fly”;
- Anton Savchenko, “On the Black Sea Wave: 33 Centuries of the Digging Sea”;
- Boris Filonenko, “Culture under under pressure from OOO/OOOO”.
The winner will be announced on December 17 in Kyiv.

What is known about the Yury Shevelyov Prize:
The Shevelyov Prize was founded in 2013 by PEN Ukraine, Kyiv-Mohyla Business School, “Dukh i Litera” publishing house, The Center for Judaica and the Ukrainian Scientific Institute of Harvard University.
It was named in honor of Yuriy Shevelyov, who started modern Ukrainian essay writing. The award recognizes the contribution to the values inseparable from the genre – independence of thought and elegance of style. It is awarded for independence of thought and elegance of style. The first laureate of the prize was Taras Prokhasko with the book “One and the same”.
Previously, it was won by members of this year's chapter Volodymyr Yermolenko (2018 “Fluid Ideologies”), Andriy Bondar (2021 , “Treats for Medor”), Andriy Pavlyshyn (2022, “We are still threatened by eternity”), Oleksandr Mykhed (2023, “Job's call sign. Chronicles of the invasion”).
