Germany has proposed to deploy Patriot air defense systems in Poland early in the new year, the German Defense Ministry said on Thursday.
Details
The units could be deployed for up to six months, the ministry said in a statement.
This will protect the logistics center in Poland, which is central to the delivery of materials to Ukraine, – said German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
His Polish counterpart, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, said in a post on the social platform X that Warsaw welcomed the decision.
Previously, Germany deployed 300 troops along with three Patriot units to Poland from January to November 2023. They were based in the city of Zamość, about 50 km from the Ukrainian border, to protect the southern city and its important rail connection with Ukraine. The reason for the deployment of units was a missile that hit the Polish village of Przewodów in November 2022, which raised fears that the war in Ukraine could spill over to the border.
