Intrigued, I reached for it.
It all started one day when I got into my husband, Marek's, car. On the backseat I noticed a small, elegant bag with the logo of a luxury brand.
Intrigued, I reached for it. Inside was a packed box of expensive perfume. My heart beat faster – Marek had never bought such things before.
Could he be surprising me? Could he have remembered our anniversaries, which he usually ignored?
I walked around the rest of the day with a smile on my face, imagining him giving me the gift. That evening, when Marek came home, I decided not to wait.
„Marek, I found something interesting in your car. This is for me?– I asked with a smile, showing my bag.
His reaction was strange. He froze for a moment, and then started talking too fast.
– „Oh, this… It's a gift for the wife of one of my clients. He asked me to buy it for him because he didn't have time.”
I didn't like that answer. Something in his voice, in the way he avoided my gaze, seemed suspicious to me. But I didn't want to make a scene, so I buried my doubts. But for days after that, that box haunted me.
A few days later, Marek came back late again. This time, I couldn't pretend that everything was fine any longer. I took matters into my own hands. I decided to check his phone. I usually avoided such things – I trusted him. But what I found exceeded my worst nightmares.
In Marek's messages, I came across conversations with a woman named Kasia. They were full of tenderness and intimacy. In one of the messages, she wrote:
„Thank you for the perfume, darling. It's perfect. You know me better than I thought.”
I felt faint. The perfume that was supposed to be for me – which I considered a token of love and care – was a gift for her. A woman I had no idea existed.
In the evening, when Marek returned, I was waiting for him in the living room. I held his phone in my hands.
– „Marek, can you explain to me who Kasia is? And why she got perfume from me?”
His face went pale. For a moment he tried to explain himself – that she was „just a colleague from work”, that „I misunderstood it”. But when I showed him the messages, he knew there was no point in lying any longer.
– “It's nothing serious,” he finally said. ” “It was a moment of weakness. I only love you.”
But those words meant nothing to me. The betrayal, “even if it was “just a moment,” had destroyed the trust we had built over the years. I sat across from him, watching him try to find yet another excuse. All I had to say was one sentence:
” „The scent of this perfume will forever remind me of your betrayal.”
Today I live alone. Marek tried to fight for our marriage, but I knew I would never be able to trust him again. The perfume, which was supposed to be a symbol of love, became a symbol of a lie. And although it hurts me that our lives fell apart because of one decision, I know that I did not deserve to live in the shadow of betrayal.”
