Former President Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the United States, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. His presidential term will officially begin in January next year, Voice of America reports.

In a tight race, Trump received at least 277 of a possible 538 electoral votes, giving him the majority he needs to become the second U.S. leader to serve two consecutive terms. The first such president was Grover Cleveland, who led the country in the late 19th century.
