Meta plans to use artificial intelligence to identify young Instagram users who are lying about their age.
Meta will classify users into two age categories – over or under 18 – based on data a person's account. This is reported by Bloomberg.
To determine a user's age, the program will study the user's profile by looking at the list of followers and the content they interact with, and even scan the “happy birthday” posts made by friends.
Based on the data obtained, people who are suspected that they are under 18 will automatically be into teen accounts regardless of how old they say they are on their profile.
The company is already moving teens to more restrictive settings based on their self-indicated date of birth.

All users under 18 will be automatically switched to teen accounts, but those over 16 or 17 will be allowed to change more restrictive privacy settings themselves. However, opting outrequires parental consent if they are under 16.
People who have been misclassified as teens will eventually be able to ask the company to remove their teen status account's account, the representative said, although the process is still in development. For now, while Meta works to improve the accuracy of its adult classifier, people who incorrectly predict they are teenagers can manually turn them off without parental permission.
